I made the following changes to this recipe; its non that I didn't like this recipe as it was published, but I wanted more than of a beef flavor in the onions so information technology gustation more than like French onion soup. Therefore, I made the following changes. I use Beefiness base of operations instead of the bullion (about tablespoon for a medium size onion) this gives it more of an intense beefiness flavor like French onion soup, as well mixed in some mozzarella cheese along with the soup base earlier placing it in the center, so topped it with the butter. It is imperative that the onions be wrapped tight with at least two layers of foil to insure the juice remains inside the package when cooking.

I love this recipe - baked, grilled, or microwaved! I kickoff learned the microwave version of this Vidalia onion recipe. (Using a melon baller, scoop top of onion. Fill cavity with beefiness bouillon granules, meridian with butter. Cover loosely, microwave well-nigh four minutes, or until tender.)

I've been making BBQ onions this way for years. They are Awesome! I add a splash of white wine or Southern Condolement or whiskey or whatever sounds good before wrapping it upwards. The alcohol will cook off and exit an incredible flavor mixed with the boullion and butter. YUMMY!!!
09/28/2002
These are really tasty - but exist sure to apply the BIG onions similar the recipe calls for. I tried this the second fourth dimension with smaller onions and they were then salty because of the burgoo.
08/19/2002
I used beef burgoo and put the onions on the grill. They tasted like french onion soup and were absolutely delicious! I used medium sized onions and they just took most twenty-30 min.
07/12/2003
These were crawly. I don't actually like raw onions and I wanted something to brand them gustation good. This worked so well, and you tin use it with most annihilation. So....good. Can't wait till the side by side grilled dinner....Thank you for posting.

What an amazing recipe! And Then like shooting fish in a barrel. I didn't really believe that this would gustatory modality like french onion soup, but it really does. Merely be sure your coals are really hot, because the onions will have quite a while to get really squeamish and soft. I tried doing some over medium coals with big onions and it took almost 2 hours. If you really desire the french onion soup experience you can put the onion with the juice (and there is a LOT of juice) into an oven-prophylactic bowl, add slices of french breadstuff, peak with cheese and throw it under the broiler until the cheese is melted. Alone, this recipe is fantastic though. I get in all the time now and it's always a hitting!
06/30/2009
I cutting the recipe in half and added some minced garlic. I made this version to go with grilled turkey. I have to say I definitely similar grilled onion with beef boullion much better, it just has a better flavor.
04/08/2003
My hubby made this using beef bouillon instead of the craven. He loves information technology!
08/02/2009
This is to die for. I made some changes -baked in 375 oven for 90 minutes. Cored medium Vidalia onions and put a teaspoon of beef base in each, topped with pat of low-cal butter & sprinked with pepper and thyme. added a splash of white wine and wrapped in foil. Tasted only like french onion soup - YUM! Could easily eat this lone with a fresh dark-green salad & french bread!
05/27/2012
Replace butter and chicken bouillon with 2 shots of Jack Daniels. Great addition to grilled steak and potatoes.
05/18/2003
These are fantastic, just I ever utilise beef boullion for more than flavor. I put them on the grill for well-nigh 45 minutes or until they caramelize on the exterior. Tastes only like French Onion soup!
07/25/2004
Oh wow! The onions are Fabled! My two medium-big onions took a piffling longer than I expected - 90 mins at 375 in the oven. But, it was worth the expect! I really liked GRUVNGYRL'south suggestion, and so I sliced and buttered four 1.v inch pieces of French bread, arranged them in a Pyrex dish, plopped the cooked onions on acme, grated some extra-sharp Cheddar and some mozzerella all over, so baked them til they were bubbles and browned (about ten mins). Absolutely DELICIOUS! With the breadstuff and cheese, this makes an excellent meal. Thank you lot Then much, Linda!
03/16/2003
Oh yes, this onion and hubby's gustatory modality buds were doin' the tango! I merely made one because the kids and I prefer our onions in the raw, simply big daddy LOVED this with his london broil! Good job Linda!
09/21/2009
I skip the chicken bullion. Scoop the eye of the onion out. Put about a tbs of butter then fill up it up with worchestire sauce. Douple wrap information technology in heavy duty foil. Put it over medium oestrus on the grill about an hour earlier y'all throw your steak on.... YUMMY!!!
08/13/2002
This was Okay. I call up I'll stick with sliced onions & mushrooms with garlic pam cooking spray on the foil (to cut the fat). Cheers for sharing Linda!
07/23/2012
Delicious and easy. I used beef bullion instead of the chicken bullion. Since our outdoor temperature was in the low 100'due south I opted to microwave (instead of baking) this dish for 6 minutes in a glass dish covered with cling wrap. Our English guests raved about the season, "Something then easy, so uncomplicated, and yet then very delicious." THANK YOU LINDA SMITH for sharing this recipe with united states!
05/31/2008
Very good topping for the smothered filet mignon recipe!! I just used 2 onions and sprinkled on powdered burgoo I cut the onion into smaller slices to shorten the cooking time to xxx minutes.

07/15/2003
Everyone who has tried these onions loves them. They are so piece of cake to prepare, also. Our home is in a perpetual land of renovations and without air workout, at the nowadays time. Cooking these on the grill outside really is groovy when the summer temps ascension.

08/22/2011
I did this in the microwave because at that place was null else that would exist going on the grill. I wrapped in parchment paper and put it in for five min. I was pleasantly surprised that the craven flavour was nowadays in the whole onion, right through to the outer layer. Of course right in the middle it was really stiff but yet skilful.
06/26/2011

07/09/2005
Pretty Tasty. Could use more than than one bouillon cube per onion, though. I cooked mine over the barbeque grill (propane) and information technology took them exactly one 60 minutes to cook.
07/04/2014
I don't know what went incorrect. they were only middle of the road. maybe the common salt, but I anticipated information technology and cut bullion in one-half and used unsalted butter. I'thousand gonna give this another shot...I know these guys are gonna be jim dandy with some tweaking.
09/15/2011
This is a keeper ! My son dont swallow onion, but this one he did !
07/17/2005
I used one large onion and one small-scale. In the large one I used a buillion cube and information technology was so salty by common salt-loving young man couldn't eat all of it. The small 1 I used craven soup base and it was skillful but still too salty. Next fourth dimension we will employ one-2 tsp of soup base and a bit less butter. Too, lookout the grilling time. The large 1 was done in most 45 mins. Cheers for the recipe, we can't wait to endeavour it once more, with modifications.
04/08/2003
We really enjoyed these - I wasnt able to become as much butter in as required merely it didnt seem to matter. My stepdaughter doesnt like onions and she even ate a few pieces and said they were non that bad
05/30/2010
Nosotros already had the grill going when I stumbled upon this recipe. I HAD to try it right then! Because I needed the onion to be ready in less than an hour, I cut it into fairly large pieces, divided all the fiddling sections, sprinkled with salt, then topped off with the butter and a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce considering I forgot that I had bouillon cubes. My little parcel of onions was washed in less than half an hr (though longer would have been fine too). It tasted quite good! I tin can run into this condign a grill standby recipe. Side by side time I'm going to follow the recipe except chop the onion over again considering information technology turned out so well and crumble the bouillon cube on top. Can't wait!

I am extremely picky about handing out praise for a recipe, but this ane is more than deserving. Perfect every time, with a deep, rich taste. This is a side dish for many of my dinners. 10/10/2010
I fabricated one big onion with beef bouillon instead of craven, and my wife said it was the best onion she's ever had in her life. It tasted exactly like french onion soup as others suggested. This is going on the permanent rotation!
02/17/2006
I'd say these were pretty good - I used a reduced table salt chicken boullion, so it wasn't too salty for my taste. I made them in the oven, only I don't call up I cooked them long enough, or at a high enough temperature, every bit they were a little underdone after an hour of cooking. I think the recipe would be really easy to modify for different spice combinations.
01/15/2012
Really neat idea and nosotros did this while camping and they were a hit.
06/07/2005
This recipe is for onion lovers and I am one. Very expert and easy too. I did use chicken base instead of the bouillon cube (too much salt).
12/27/2005

I don't fifty-fifty put a piece of onion on my hamburgers. But this? I fabricated two vidalia onions for the ii of united states of america, figuring I could share mine with my husband. NOPE. I ate information technology all. I used vidalia onions, "Improve Than Boullion" Beef Base of operations and much less butter because we're on diets. And it was nonetheless divine. BRAVO.
06/22/2009
These were wonderful! I made 2 big onions on the grill for a cookout. I used a little less butter, only well-nigh 1 TBSP each. Wow what keen flavour! I got rave reviews from everyone and I recall nosotros'll make one of these everytime we grill now!
03/16/2006
These make a ton of onions! Very expert.
07/11/2015
Made these this night. As others have done, I used low sodium beef burgoo (actually the "Meliorate than Bouillon" reduced sodium.) I besides added two T of Jack Daniels to each. Also, double wrapped them in heavy duty foil. They were succulent! I wouldn't go as far equally saying French Onion Soup, merely they were a perfect accompaniment to my grilled steaks.
03/27/2010
I loved this care for, information technology reminds me of when I was a child and we went camping and threw them in the bivouac. The only thing I added was a tad bit of garlic salt. Splendid! I recommend to all!

Nosotros put them on the grill and DANG they were tasty tasty! Glad I didn't have any potatos on paw. I volition definately practise this one over again!
06/12/2007
Excellent flavour! Nosotros had these with BBQ ribs, corn and potatoes. Very nice side dish and the leftovers were excellent the next nighttime on beer brats. I made mine with beef boullion. I got them assembled & wrapped, and so cooked them for well-nigh 20 minutes in the convection oven just to speed things along before finishing them on the grill. Definitely a keeper!
08/06/2007
So good, I recall next fourth dimension I will offset it in the micro for a few minutes, everything else was set up except for the onions. I volition also carve more of center out next time, filling was overflowing, and so and then good. yum

I did use the chicken instead of the beef...
04/08/2002
My fiance and I loved this. Information technology couldn't take been whatsoever easier to prepare and was juicy and delicious. We don't usually even like onions (unless they're fried)

Awesome! My young man and I fabricated these two nights in row, they were sooooo good. We used beefiness bouillion granules instead of cubes, and merely had room for one-half of the butter, which was plenty for u.s.. The onions were perfectly cooked at i hr on the grill. Next time, we want to try some chopped garlic mixed with the butter. So expert, and then piece of cake!
06/27/2015
My dad has been doing this forever, it's astonishing. We're use vidallia onions ordinarily and a beefiness bouillon. Wrap it up like a Hershey osculation. Serve over a squeamish steak, pouring the juices all over it. Yum!
07/ten/2006
I thought the taste of these onions was very expert. I had a little trouble with the boullion. The boullion didn't want to melt in the onion. Information technology stayed pretty full-bodied inside the onion, and so I had to mix it upto become the flavors blended, only very good. would've liked information technology a little more well done. took longer than an hour to get cooked to desired texture.
07/30/2012
totally like shooting fish in a barrel...totally yummy..and I omitted the butter and information technology came out marvelous :)
07/16/2008
Used chicken and beef boullion. Liked chicken best. Everyone liked.
07/05/2010
Pretty good side when grilling. I used a local grown sweet onion. I besides used ii boullion cubes and a fiddling more butter based on many reviews claiming it was non flavorful enough. It seemed to be flavorful plenty to me! Good with steaks.
06/14/2009
Excellent on the grill - just similar a very good french onion soup. Nosotros used a dollar store pie tin can instead of individually wrapping each onion. Then covered the pie tin can with tin can foil for indirect grilling.
05/xv/2014
Sounds great, but salty! Bullion is salty!I always make my own!
02/16/2014
All I can say is WONDERFUL! I never cared for the broiled onions that my husband liked (no real flavor) only these babies are but similar eating a bowl of yummy French onion soup. Will be making these many times.

ten/12/2012

07/20/2014
Adept stuff! I like them to most, Claire has them once in awhile.
05/09/2009
So practiced with Steak. Hallow out the heart of a onion with a parring knife. Stuff with the butter/burgoo cube - rub some on the elevation. Wrapped in foil and grill - indirect heat for sixty minutes. Fabled.
07/20/2007

12/28/2014
i made this for bf since he was already grilling some mojo craven.. i scaled it down to i cherry-red onion, a veggie bouillon cube and almost a tbsp of margarine.. he really enjoyed it.. ty for the recipe
06/17/2009
Pretty crawly (I don't swallow onions only this got a 'This is trulely something special' from the boyfriend). The boyfriend thought craven bouillon is probably amend than beef, so nosotros may non try the beef option better. The butter/bouillon didn't disperse then well, so I might cut cris crosses into the pinnacle or something, there'southward no way to really spread the onion out. I'll utilise Goya bouillon packets from now on equally well, and sprinkle some on pinnacle.
07/23/2008
Love this! I used a beef bouillon cube (what I had on hand) and it turned out great!
03/30/2001

Unbelievably astonishing!! So easy, and so succulent! The best grilled onions I have always had - and the 3 guests I had over for dinner couldn't get plenty of them either!!
06/20/2004
These were succulent! I used large vidalia onions - scooped out the heart, plopped a beef boullon cube in and butter. Mine took way longer than 1 hour to cook, closer to 2. They were worth the wait. I reheated one of the leftover onions the next day, it was Groovy!
